One of the most exciting things about learning another language is being able to successfully use that language in a real-life situation. Twice a year, in the Winter and in the Spring, students travel to the Rheinländer German Restaurant and either the Bavarian Delicatessen or the Edelweiss Delicatessen where they are able to make use of some of the German they have learned. This includes singing songs in German at the Rheinländer. Accordion players and Rheinländer waiters and waitresses will serenade the students. Students may speak German to the wait staff, if they wish.
Students may ask questions or order something in German while at either delicatessen. Students have the opportunity to buy German meats, cheeses, canned items, pastries, candy, compact discs, magazines, books, and more. The Bavarian and Edelweiss delicatessens carry products from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
After visiting the delicatessen, we will go to the Rheinländer German Restaurant for dinner. Most students will be served the Student Sampler Meal, which includes:
-Swiss cheese fondue with rye and cracked wheat bread
-Bavarian lentil soup
-dinner roll with butter and Pflaumenmus (plum jam)
-bratwurst sausage *
-chicken schnitzel *
-spätzle (egg noodles)
-sauerkraut or rotkohl (group choice)
-apple strudel with whipped cream
-milk, tea, coffee, or soda pop
-water
*Vegetarian participants, may have either the vegetable pasta or potato pancakes rather than the sausage and schnitzel. Please tell Herr Johnston when you sign up, if you wish to have a vegetarian meal.
The goals of the trip are as follows:
1. to give students an authentic speaking experience, if they wish to speak
2. to expose students to German cuisine and goods from German-speaking countries
3. to review and practice good table manners
4. have fun
Cost of the Rheinländer Restaurant Trip
The Student Sampler Meal costs $14.50 and adding a 20% gratuity makes the total price $17.40. This does not include the cost of transportation.
Only personal checks, cashier's checks, or money orders made payable to the Glencoe High School will be accepted. No cash will be accepted! Please write “Glencoe German Club” in the memo space. The total trip cost does not include any items purchased at a delicatessen. Write the check for the exact amount. Change will not given. Students will be charged a $20.00 fee for each returned check.
Payment is to be made a minimum of five days prior to the date of the trip. If you have a problem with this, please speak with Herr Johnston. Exceptions may be granted in certain circumstances.
Refunds will only be given if a participant notifies Herr Johnston five days prior to the date of the event. Even if you are unable to participate in an event, because of a personal or family illness, family emergency, school obligation, or have received a punishment from school officials, such as suspension or expulsion from school, you will not receive a refund if it is five days or less before the event. If you are unable to attend at the last minute, you may find someone to go in your place. Any substitute participant must first be approved by Herr Johnston and a Glencoe H.S. administrator. Then he/she must have a completed a parent/guardian permission form. The permission form may be faxed to the school one day before departure.
Students, who have participated on this trip in the past, have enjoyed it very much. I hope all students enrolled in German will consider coming along.
